Let’s embrace and respect our diversity.
"Inclusiveness through Diversity." No, it’s not an oxymoron, at least not at Milpark Education. In his first month in office, former president Nelson Mandela proclaimed: “Each of us is as intimately attached to the soil of this beautiful country as are the famous Jacaranda trees in Pretoria and the Mimosa trees of the Bushveld – a rainbow nation at peace with itself and the world”
September is Heritage Month and let us embrace, respect and celebrate our country's rich diversity. The Milpark internal social responsibility committee launched the Diversity Campaign that is about change and intellectuality, as well as a catalyst for transformation and building social cohesion. While our students are transitory, they will leave with impressionable ideas of scholarship, engagement and citizenship. Our staff who will remain with Milpark for much longer periods are understanding the need for openness; diversity; sharing a common vision and mission, and Milpark’s student-centred approach.
The critical advancement is that staff and students alike are opening their personal and group spaces towards forging relationships with the wider Milpark community. The diversity campaign must be measured against the following objectives:
- To engage the Milpark community in activities and programmes that support and concretise non-racialism and democratic practice
- Utilise the month of September to highlight a number of broader issues including gender, sexuality, etc.
- Promote transformation and social cohesion at Milpark and a platform to engage our partners, stakeholders, alumni, parents, etc.
The diversity campaign serves a strategic and purposive function. The committee believes that collectively, our willingness to serve Milpark’s mission and to learn from our experience will be our best achievement yet.
Happy Heritage month from all of us at Milpark.
