The Milpark Education Student Chapter team displayed its true mettle as it swept aside seasoned competition at this year’s Association of Black Securities and Investment Professionals (ABSIP) Student Development Awards function held on 15 October 2016 at the Parktonian Hotel in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

Stunningly, the team, which was formed barely a year ago, and the smallest in size in terms of membership, walked away with a total of four awards, including the coveted Best Student Chapter of the year, brushing aside competition from eleven other member institutions, including established chapters like Wits University, University of Cape Town, University of Pretoria and the University of KwaZulu Natal.

Oratile Hlakoana, a second-year Bachelor of Commerce student majoring in Investment Management, is the incoming ABSIP Milpark Chairperson, and she received awards for Woman of the Year and Most Promising Student Entrepreneur of the Year. She owns and operates a Bed and Breakfast Guesthouse called Oamogetswe, which translates to ‘You are welcome’. Tebogo Kopele, the outgoing ABSIP Milpark Chairperson, took home the Student of the Year award for his contribution to ABSIP, ABSIP Milpark and social outreach engagements.

Tebogo, who is a third-year student doing a Bachelor of Commerce with a major in Investment Management, is also the founder and chairperson of an educational non-profit organisation called Thuto Ke Lebone (Education Is Light). His organisation has adopted over ten high schools in the rural areas of the North West and provides career guidance, counselling and motivational sessions to learners. Thuto Ke Lebone was recently featured on The Sowetan and The New Age Publications. Tebogo is also an avid financial markets blogger and financial markets radio presenter, all of which has contributed to his winning one of the awards.

Well done to the team! We are very proud of these achievements, and while we are not very surprised by the result, this is just another confirmation of Milpark Education’s competitiveness and the quality of education that we offer.

The ABSIP Student Development’s mandate is to promote career awareness and professional development initiatives targeted at the ABSIP student members, with the aim of better preparing students for the world of work within the financial services sector. To find out more, read here.
