The Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Cape Town honoured its donors recently by unveiling a donor board on which Milpark Education was also acknowledged.

The momentous event also marked the unveiling of the hospital’s new 39-bed specialised paediatric Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with a 10-bed high care unit for babies and eight isolation cubicles that welcomed its first patients on Monday, 23 October 2017.

For the past three years, the hospital has through its various donors, managed to raise over R100 million to ensure that the hospital continues its work of saving children’s lives. Some of the new additions to the unit include more beds, a waiting room for parents, a breastfeeding room and a space for social workers.

What started off as a simple donation box exercise quickly turned into an initiative that saw various internal departments hosting activities and setting challenges for each other to raise money for the ICU facility in 2016.

The Milpark internal Social Responsibility Committee led by Lucinda Jones rallied the various departments in August last year and managed to raise the sum of R20 000. Julian van der Westhuizen, Milpark’s CEO, committed to matching the money raised. The team embarked on a similar exercise this year and through their passion and drive, Milpark earned a coveted spot on the donor board.

In a statement, the team shares: “It was an absolute honour to have our name on the donor board. It was also very heartwarming to hear the children speaking about their experience and how the Red Cross has impacted their lives.  With the new equipment and unit, the ICU will be able to save many more lives.”
