New skills will boost SA’s economy as Milpark Education partners with Skills Development Academy
On 4 June 2018, Santam, South Africa’s largest general insurer, launched a nationwide Skills Development Academy in an effort to increase the availability of scarce and critical skills in the financial services sector.
The Skills Development Academy will comprise three initiatives: a Learnership Programme, a Bursary Scheme and a Graduate Programme. Milpark Education is proud to announce that they will be partnering with the Graduate Programme arm of the Academy as its official training partner.
Why a Graduate Programme in Insurance?
The aim of the Graduate Programme is to build a sustainable pipeline of skilled young people who will be trained in the areas of surveying, underwriting and relationship manager environments, skills currently lacking in the financial sector. This qualification will enable graduates to apply for/progress to professional membership of the Insurance Institute of South Africa (IISA) in the designation category of Licentiate (LIISA).
During his keynote address at the launch, Milpark Education Director, Ismail Sadek confirmed, “Milpark's active role has been to embrace the project with Santam from the beginning and assist in identifying the most appropriate insurance qualifications, and customising and developing modules on scarce and critical skills, desperately required by the industry.”
According to Lizé Lambrechts, Santam’s CEO, this initiative is just one of Santam’s contributions to developing our country and sustaining its future growth.
How the Graduate Programme works
The Graduate Programme will be offered to 20 candidates and is open to all South African citizens, although the target audience is unemployed graduates in possession of the relevant undergraduate degree/national diploma. The 18-month programme will provide participants with a blend of theoretical training and practical workplace experience. All applicable fees and material will be covered by Santam. Upon completion of the programme, qualifying learners will obtain a Higher Certificate in Short-term Insurance qualification (NQF 5) and will be considered for employment within Santam. In conclusion of his address at the launch, Sadek confirmed the opportunities the Skills Academy holds: “This initiative is the perfect launch platform for a career in the industry. I believe that hard work and dedication through the Academy could very easily mean that a future CEO of the Santam group could be sitting in the audience today.”
