General information about Regulatory Exams (RE)

Are you ready for Regulatory Examinations?

The FAIS Act and its subordinate legislation prescribe a number of requirements that individuals who provide financial advice/services on behalf of a financial services provider must meet. One of these requirements is that all financial services providers, representatives and key individuals have to pass the industry’s Regulatory Examinations before certain deadlines. Milpark Education offers you all the tools you need to succeed in the Regulatory Examinations. Thorough preparation is essential!

Work through the course material

The FSCA advises candidates to spend at least three months preparing for the examination. The good news is that if you are an experienced adviser, you will no doubt be familiar with some of the legislative content. However, even if you are experienced in financial services, you should not be complacent or underestimate the amount of preparation time and effort that need to be applied to pass the Regulatory Exams. Tackle the book thoroughly, chapter by chapter and make detailed notes as you go.

Practice multiple-choice exams

The practice exam consists of multiple-choice questions (MCQs). A detailed report  on your strengths and development areas is issued with each practice exam. This allows you to assess your own RE exam readiness.

Please note that these practice exams are not a replacement for the FSCA Regulatory Exams. You are required to register separately with an independent FSCA examination body (e.g. Moonstone, Financial Planning Institute) to write your Regulatory Exam.

We recommend you practice answering MCQs to develop the skills needed. MCQ papers are not guessing games and contain no patterns. There are test-yourself questions at the end of each chapter in the study notes to help you assess your understanding of the material.

What determines a student’s success in the regulatory exams?

Milpark has been offering support to a large number of advisers over the past months, and it is our informed belief that passing the examinations is dependent on a combination of the following:

  • Time and effort spent studying.
  • Attendance at workshops.
  • Completing practice examinations.
  • Language ability.
  • General background and context in the industry.
  • Academic ability – the ability to memorise information.
  • The ability to analyse and interpret MCQ questions.

Textbooks

Milpark Education has appointed WIZE BOOKS as its preferred provider of prescribed textbooks

Milpark students will receive preferential pricing when purchasing prescribed textbooks from WIZE BOOKS.

In order to qualify for the discounted rates, students need to access the WIZE BOOKS ONLINE STORE by logging onto myMilpark Student Portal.

Please note that books ordered directly from www.wizebooks.co.za are NOT discounted.

WIZE BOOKS can be contacted on (012) 362 5885 Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 17:00 or via email at [email protected]

What students are saying about using wizebooks:

  • "Very glad you guys have partnered with Milpark. Better rates on books and speedy service. Will be using you for all my future modules."

Student support

Whichever way to study you choose, Milpark will support you in your efforts! At Milpark, students are supported via a number of services. These include:

Student Services

Student Services provide a comprehensive student enquiry service to students to both distance learning online and distance learning students. Students are able to contact Students Services via email or telephone to address all administrative issues, to clarify procedures and obtain assistance with navigation of online facilities.

Help from Tutors

Milpark Education has a tutor service to assist distance-learning students during their studies. If students need help with an academic problem (related to studying the course content), they can request assistance from their tutor. They are encouraged to post their question on the tutor forum for the module on the online course pages to enable fellow students to benefit from the discussion as well. If they do not want to post their question or problem in the forum and prefer individual assistance, they can use the tutor email function. Contact-learning students are able to get help from their lecturers during class attendance.

Counselling Services

Students may experience problems related to:

  1. their studies (study techniques, motivation, self-esteem, time management, etc.).
  2. career decisions (they may not be sure that you have made the correct choice in terms of their qualification).
  3. personal issues (family issues, personal problems, etc.).

Students who need assistance can contact the qualified student counsellor(s) at Milpark.

We recommend that students visit the How to study and Career guidance sections on myMilpark first. If resources on these pages are not sufficient to address their problem, they can contact the student counsellor.

For personal problems, students need to consult the relevant resources page under Personal problems before contacting the student counsellor.

  • Distance-learning (including online learning) students can contact the counsellor via email and will receive support via email or telephone.

HelloMilpark

If students are not satisfied with the service they received, they have the option of sending a complaint to HelloMilpark.

This service is available only as a last resort to students who have followed procedures and formal channels – in your request you need to refer to your earlier efforts to solve the problem. The relevant manager will address your complaint speedily.
