Alumni in the spotlight: Goodwill Khuzwayo
Life has never been easy for Milpark graduate Goodwill Khuzwayo who has had to battle both abject poverty and living with a disability. Literacy and education have always been important goals and it is these that pushed Khuzwayo to realise his dream of attaining a number of qualifications during his professional career.
He says that he is motivated by South African companies echoing the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation’s (UNESCO) call to address literacy through sponsored learnerships. Khuzwayo studied the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers’ (ICB) National Certificate in Office Administration offered by Milpark Education and is forever grateful “to my employer, Milpark Education and ICB for this great opportunity and their dedication to empowering our nation”.
Khuzwayo says: “When this opportunity was presented to me I took it as a platform to prove that disability or poverty must not be a stumbling block to enrich our minds and prosper in life. This was not an easy journey but hard work, determination and ambition helped me pass all exams at first attempt. I am a full-time employee working in a deadline-driven department, and a father.”
He says by completing his qualification he believes that he can inspire others to empower themselves with knowledge despite their circumstances. Khuzwayo shared his experience of studying at Milpark:
Q: Describe your experience of studying your qualification through Milpark Education?
A: Milpark Education offered me world-class service, supported and guided me in the right direction and also catered for all of my needs as a disabled person. Most of us did not have an accounting background but our facilitator offered additional lessons on weekend without additional charges to help us understand this subject. This helped me a lot because I passed both the bookkeeping and cost accounting modules at first attempt with distinction.
Q: How relevant is an Office Administration qualification in 2017?
A: An Office Administration qualification is very relevant in today’s world as it also aligned to today’s technology. Although technology might be dominating our lives today, good skills are required to make it function smoothly.
Q: Why did you study the National Certificate in Office Administration?
A: I studied a number of courses including the IT CompTIA A+, Microsoft server administrator (MCITP 2008) and SQL server 2008 to mention the few, but I didn’t get exposure in the IT field.
I have been working in the admin sector for more than 10 years and although my current job is about performance reporting and report analysis, there is a lot of admin involved and as a result, I realised that I have to support my experience with this qualification.
