Milpark Adult Matric - Finding your feet
Life doesn’t always unfold in sequence, if anything, it is persistence and the ability to regain lost ground that ultimately determine those who succeed in life.
As Nelson Mandela observed, “It is not where you start but how high you aim that matters for success”.
Not all individuals have the same opportunities, and each person’s experiences in life are unique. In a fast-paced society, where stories of childhood celebrities and young tech billionaires are prevalent, it’s easy to feel “left behind” and lose sight of the fact that we all have our own paths, which we will venture along at our own pace. Recent research has indicated that those who pursue success later in life have a higher chance of attaining it, as they have a broader foundation of life experience to support them.
Most success stories come from the sort of life experience that no university can teach. Adult matric enrollees at Milpark, who have successfully arrived at this crossroads in their lives without previously having attained a matric, are a testament to their own strength, tenacity and perseverance.
Just take South Africa’s own Sipho ‘Hotstix’ Mabuse, who attained his Adult Matric at the age of 60. For Mr Mabuse, his Adult Matric was the gateway to his ultimate goal of enrolling at University for a Master’s Degree in Anthropology. Mr Mabuse proudly announced on Twitter, “The news is out. I PASSED MY #MATRIC. AM SO HAPPY…Going to university next year.”
Sindiwe Magona, the eldest of eight children, never had the opportunity of completing matric. She fell pregnant at the age of 19, and, at the age of 23, when she was pregnant with her third child, she lost her job. Destitute and making a living through domestic work, Magona slept on a garage floor, earning just enough to feed her children, while she finished her Adult Matric through correspondence. She went on to register for a degree. With her improved qualifications, she was able to teach at Herschel Girls School for a period of five years, during which time she won a scholarship to do her Master’s Degree at Columbia University. Magona went on to work for the United Nations for 23 years on their anti-Apartheid radio station. She was awarded an honorary doctorate from Hartwick College for her efforts. Magona has since become a noted storyteller, publishing a wealth of novels, poems and children’s books. She is living proof that Matric is the first step on a learning journey.
Obtaining an adult matric creates opportunity where it was previously absent. It could be the first step towards getting a new job, or a milestone that leads to a post-matric qualification, or a promotion within the company you already work for.
Given that most adult matric enrollees already have families, jobs and a plethora of commitments, Milpark Education have designed their adult matric course to allow flexible distance learning that can be structured to accommodate YOUR unique requirements. Milpark enables students to create a balance in their lives and reimagine their futures.
