Team Milpark on the Financial Planning Challenge

While the team from Milpark Education may not have walked away winners at the Financial Planning Challenge (FPC) Competition hosted by the Financial Planning Institute (FPI) of Southern Africa in Cape Town recently, the experience exposed them to new avenues they never thought of.

The competition prepares the next generation of financial planners and is designed exclusively for students studying any financial planning or finance-inclined undergraduate degree programme registered in South Africa.

The competition criteria illustrate potential avenues for satisfying the Financial Planning Competency Framework and Standards. Teams participate in preparing and presenting a complete financial plan as well as competing in a quiz-style challenge. Team Milpark competed against a team from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and a team from the University of Johannesburg (which ultimately won the challenge) making team UJ the inaugural winners of the competition.

Team Milpark comprised Angus Wagner, an associate at Investec Asset Management, as well as Elani Kirsten and Matthys Brits, both support consultants at the Efficient Group. They entered the competition because they wanted to test themselves and see how far they could go in the challenge. They say that the challenge gave them a fresh perspective on the FPI field and exposed them to aspects they had not previously thought of.

Matthys Brits says he felt more at home with the industry and that’s where he belongs. “The competition definitely broadened my horizons and exposed me to different aspects of the industry I had never given too much thought to. I was encouraged to pursue all ideas and desires. It’s really encouraging knowing you have the support and backing of people you haven’t met before.”

Elani Kirsten says the competition motivated her to do better and she gained indispensable knowledge that will help her one day improve the CFP® Professional’s industry by “providing sound advice and expertise.”

Karin Muller, lecturer in the School of Financial Planning and Insurance (FP& I), says “We are most grateful to the FPI in launching this initiative, for their planning and efforts in putting together a competition which has been a resounding success and has provided students with a wonderful first-hand experience of the industry.”

Marilize Putter, Dean of the School of Financial Planning and Insurance says: “Milpark is proud to have been a participant as well as  to have been in the top three finalists, proving that our students are equipped with the highest standards of knowledge and experience, and can excel in their field.”
