MBA students fundraise in India


Milpark Business School MBA students on an eight-day study tour to India as part of the Business in Emerging Markets (BEMA) module made innovative use of their trip by helping to raise funds for the M.G. Nagar government primary school in Filmnagar, Hyderabad to acquire much-needed equipment for its sports program.

The students, hosted by the Indian School of Business in Hyderabad, were working with the Kriti Foundation - a not-for-profit organisation passionate about making a positive impact on the lives of urban slum dwellers. The foundation has worked on a number of projects including health education, immunisation, conducting drives to ensure children don’t drop out of school, day care centres to enable women to go out and work, skills training and business training for women.

With a target of $2200, the students managed to raise over $2400 through a crowdfunding website that will go towards the purchase of outdoor playground equipment. BEMA lecturer, Muhammed Patel said the visit to the school and subsequent fundraising initiative was an essential opportunity for the students to implement a project within one of the world’s emerging markets. “The fundraising effort is our way of leaving a legacy and uplifting the lives of children in India. The new equipment to be purchased will definitely improve the pupils learning experience and it will certainly make a difference.”

With the Milpark MBA’s emphasis on corporate social responsibility, the experience “adds so much value in what we have been discussing in class and it empowered them with strategies that will help them overcome barriers when dealing with businesses or projects in emerging markets,” said Patel. He added that the fundraising spirit of the students was hailed by the foundation and local businesses.

During their eight-day tour, the MBA students were exposed to lectures by renowned professors, visited various companies including a bustling technology hub that features over 200 start-up businesses, went on culture tours and were exposed to a design thinking workshop modelled on the Stanford University design thinking methodology.


BEMA is offered with the intent to provide students with a framework that will enable the understanding of socio-economic, marketing, legal and cross-cultural aspects when conducting business in the BRICS countries.  Why would you do the Business in Emerging Markets Executive Development Course?
