From Failed Matric to Postgraduate: The Rise of Tsholo Nkoane

Postgraduate success didn't come easily for Tsholofelo (Tsholo) Nkoane, but his journey proves that perseverance pays off. For Tsholo, optimism is more than just a mindset; it’s a way of life.

Despite failing Matric multiple times and facing significant financial challenges, he refused to let setbacks define his future. Today he is a proud graduate of Milpark’s Postgraduate Diploma in Public Administration (PGDipPA) and currently pursuing his MBA, with his sights set on a doctorate.

His story is a powerful testament to the transformative power of education, particularly postgraduate education, in changing lives. It’s a reminder that with positivity, perseverance, and an unwavering belief in oneself, it’s possible to turn failures into stepping stones for success.

By embracing challenges head-on, he is paving the way for future generations, proving that no obstacle is too great when matched with an unbreakable spirit.

Persistence Pays Off

He was determined to be the first in his family to pursue higher education and ultimately achieve postgraduate success “I took it upon myself to be a beacon of hope in my family, a change maker,” he shares. However, the road was not easy. “I failed Matric the first time, rewrote Maths and Physical Science and failed again. At my third attempt I still didn’t pass.”

Financial pressures only added to the difficulty. “There were times it seemed we wouldn’t be able to afford it, but I always believed I would find a way. I knew my family would be proud of me, and that mattered more than failing.”

Through it all, his faith and optimism remained unshaken. “From COVID, to balancing studies and being the only provider for the family, there were stressful times. But I always trusted things would work out, even when they were tough.”

Continued Learning and Growth

He eventually passed Matric and enrolled on the Management Assistant course at Tshwane North TVET College. From there, his career began to take shape. “I initially got a job as an admin clerk before starting an internship at the University of Pretoria,” he explains.

He later joined the Municipal Demarcation Board and began his Postgraduate Diploma in Public Administration (PGDipPA) at Milpark.

“Milpark was one of the few institutions offering the course online and at an affordable price.” The diploma, designed to equip public sector managers with essential skills in leadership, strategy, and governance, was a perfect fit. “The content was relevant and the support from the lecturers gave me what I needed to succeed.”

Life-Changing Learning

He found the PGDipPA an enriching experience and enjoyed the broad range of subjects it covered. “The Public Policy module was one of my favourites,” he says. “I also really enjoyed Monitoring and Evaluation, and HR because I was part of the HR team at work. Public finance, though – eish that was tough.”

“The course taught me how to solve real-world problems at work and prepared me for future challenges,” he adds. “I still refer to the materials - they’re useful in my current MBA studies and day-to-day work.”

He credits what he learned at Milpark to making him a key resource in his organisation. “I’ve become the go-to person for stakeholder engagement and can contribute insightfully to policy and strategy discussions. The diploma has changed my life.”

Looking Ahead: The Road to a Doctorate

His educational journey is far from over. He is currently pursuing an MBA and has his sights set on a Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA). “I’ll definitely continue studying after my MBA,” he says. “When I finished my diploma, my mother wanted to throw me a graduation party. I told her, ‘Not until I finish my DBA!’”

For Tsholo, success isn’t about money. “It’s about peace of mind and doing what you love,” he explains. “You can earn millions, but if you’re not happy, it’s not worth it.”

Stay Positive & Keep Pushing

His advice to anyone facing similar challenges is simple: “Keep dreaming, keep pushing and stay positive. Failing Matric did not stop me. I didn’t take it personally - I just kept trying.”

He believes it’s important to enjoy what you study. “Loving what you’re learning, makes everything easier. Climbing the ladder is never easy, but education is the key to getting to the top.”

His optimism is his guiding light. “No matter how difficult things seem, trust that things will work out. Even when it feels like everything is against you, don’t give up. It’s not about being perfect – it’s about being persistent.”
