Dr Cobus Oosthuizen – my journey into academia

Dr Cobus Oosthuizen (BCom, MBA, PhD) is the Dean of Milpark Business School, situated in Melville, Johannesburg. His areas of specialisation are Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Strategy, with keen interests extending into the areas of technology, innovation, complexity, philosophy, artificial intelligence, futures studies and the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR).

He started his working career in the mining industry, initially in gold then later in the platinum sector. Prior to entering academia on a full-time basis, he was an independent Consulting Strategist specialising in change and organisational renewal to large corporates and numerous SMEs, with a client portfolio that spanned the mining, banking, manufacturing, telecoms, tourism, educational and financial services industry sectors.

Due to his diverse interests and ‘ecosystem orientation’, he considers himself a “transdisciplinarian”. Cobus’s current research focus is 4IR and its influence on strategy, leadership, management practice and the world of work.

“I believe that we are not captives to a pre-determined set of choices, but that the future offers many possible outcomes, and that as a collective, we should aim at creating pathways that enable the enactment of individual and social events to shape a preferred future in which all stakeholders will benefit,” says Cobus.

In the media

He contributes regularly to popular press, has presented papers at academic conferences, published refereed journal articles, contributed book chapters, and acts as reviewer for a number of academic journals. Cobus is a keen blogger and often expresses views related to his fields of interest via his personal blog and LinkedIn.

Now and in the future

Cobus supervises master's and doctoral students, and serves as external examiner for master's and doctoral dissertations, and PhD proposal defence panel-member for various South African universities.

He is a member of the Southern Africa Institute for Management Scientists and the Institute of Directors; and serves as the Organising Director of the International Business Conference (IBC). He is currently busy with a second doctorate focusing on leadership and management practice in the 4IR.
