How MBA Degree from Milpark is Transforming Moses' Career

How an MBA from Milpark transformed Moses' Career

When Moses Maponya chose to do a Master of Business Administration (MBA) with Milpark Education, he didn’t realise how transformative it would be. Not only in terms of gaining skills and knowledge, but on a personal level, too.

Driven by Continuous Growth

Although his current role in finance in the education and training sector is a busy and demanding one, he believes strongly in continuous self-development. At this point in his career, he felt an online MBA was the best way to stretch himself.

“I wanted a transformative educational experience to build on my strategic thinking and decision-making abilities. Career-wise, for me the next level will be CFO or CEO, so an MBA was the best choice,” Maponya said.

Why He Decided on Milpark

Milpark was his final choice based on several factors. First, it’s registered with the department of Higher Education and is the only online institution in Africa accredited by the Association of MBAs (AMBA), a global accreditation agency. Second, Milpark offers a full-time online study option.

“The fact that Milpark is one of the few offering a wholly online MBA that is also accredited stood out for me. I’m working full-time while studying, and they are flexible in terms of how long you can take to finish the qualification. That’s been very helpful as well.”

A Surprise Side-Effect

Although Moses took on the online MBA to improve his strategic abilities, among others, it had an unexpected effect. He found it had a profound impact on his self-belief and confidence.

“Before the programme, I would find it difficult to share my opinions in meetings and so on. I felt they weren’t good enough. But I now communicate my views confidently and participate meaningfully in strategic conversations.

“It’s given me a whole new perspective on being a strategic leader. Instead of just sitting in the corner at conferences, I’m now able to start conversations. The main thing it’s given me is how much more I believe in myself and my leadership abilities. Even my wife has noticed it at home,” he chuckles.

Essential for Entrepreneurs

Moses also has aspirations to start his own business and feels the online MBA will be vital to success in this area.

“The MBA gives you a structural understanding of business. HR, finance, leadership strategy, supply chain… all the essential aspects are covered. It also prepares you technically and emotionally to withstand pressure. Another critical skill is how to better manage people from a variety of backgrounds.”

His studies have informed his position at work, helping him to guide and coach his team more and take on less himself. Positive feedback from his team tells him this new approach is working.

Mastering the Balance

When asked how he’s handled the study workload Moses doesn’t mince words. “The course itself isn’t difficult, but the workload requires a lot of effort and dedication. As long as you plan properly and manage your time.”

To this end he rises at 5am from Monday to Thursday and does two solid hours each morning before work. His other essential tool is a wall calendar to keep track of deadlines. The main thing, he says, is discipline and time management. “If you have a plan and stick to it, I have no doubt you’ll be successful.”

Several Levels of Support

When he ran into trouble, he found Milpark’s coaching, which is part of the leadership development module, to be invaluable.

“The coaching sessions were really effective to help manage the work-life balance as well as leadership challenges. I could discuss anything that was bothering me. I haven’t been the same person since those sessions,” he chuckles. In fact, he found them so useful he chose to continue them in a private capacity.

“Support in general was outstanding, and I want to give a shout-out to Evelyn Kannigen, the programme administrator. She checked up on me regularly and made sure I was handling the course demands. The lecturers, too, will follow up with me if I miss any submissions to make sure I’m handling the workload.”

More help has come from Milpark’s Service Desk, which assists with issues such as connectivity problems during critical moments like exams.

Online All the Way

Based on his experience thus far, Moses highly recommends online learning. Despite having several qualifications already he believes continuous learning is essential to keep up in and stay relevant a constantly changing world.

“The online learning experience has been very positive,” he says. “Even though its fully online, you don’t feel isolated. You can check with fellow students as part of a group and even during lectures, there are breakaway groups to discuss material.”

Next year Moses will continue with his online MBA and hopes to graduate in the fourth quarter of 2026. The next big hurdle will be his dissertation, but he is confident he will prevail. The foundation he’s laid thus far has given him everything he needs to succeed.

Thinking Of Taking It On Yourself?

Moses says if you’re thinking of doing it yourself, don’t hesitate. “If anyone at the mid-tier management level is considering the MBA programme, or another higher management certificate, I would say go for it. If you want to balance work, studies and life, I would recommend going fully online. My experience with Milpark has been excellent, and I have no regrets regarding my choice.”

His final piece of advice is that if you’re already engaged in studies, try move directly into the next programme without a long break in between, because you’ll find it a lot easier to adjust to the demands.
