Bachelor of Commerce Majoring in Human Resource Management

This qualification provides an overview of management practice in a national and international context. The programme aims to develop conceptual understanding, synthesis and application of management and management theory for students wishing to advance in management careers. Furthermore, it aims to equip qualifying students with the knowledge and practical skills required to perform effectively in a Human Resource Management role, as well as with an appropriate knowledge base as preparation for further learning.

Endorsed by the SA Board for People Practices (SABPP), the BCom degree, with Human Resource Management as a major, aims to equip students with the essential knowledge and skills necessary to lead and manage people within organisations. This structured approach aims to enable students to understand and apply a range of skills – from basic human resource management and workplace relations to organisational leadership and development.

On successful completion of the qualification, the student will receive a Bachelor of Commerce Degree, NQF Level 7.

Available learning modes

Full- or Half-load

Students can complete the programme in a minimum of three or six years, and a maximum of nine years.

To complete the programme in three years, students need to dedicate about 40 hours a week to studies, just like at a contact university. We call this the full-load programme.

If students can’t dedicate 40 hours per week for the full-load, there is the option to complete the programme over a minimum of six years on a half-load.

Immersive Online Learning

IO Learning is a guided, flexible digital experience designed to foster deeper learning and meaningful connection. Through scheduled sessions, interactive content, and collaborative activities, students engage in a human-centred environment that blends structure with flexibility. Advanced online tools, small-group collaboration, and personalised feedback create a rich, engaging, and connected learning journey.

Distance Learning

DL is a flexible, self-paced study mode for independent learners who prefer minimal online interaction. Students rely on textbooks and study guides, with optional access to online resources. Ideal for those with limited internet or who prefer offline study, DL offers lecturer support with less frequent engagement, allowing learners to manage their own progress.

Minimum Admission Requirements

Require a Senior Certificate with matriculation endorsement/exemption for degree studies. Candidates who have a Senior Certificate but who do not meet the matriculation endorsement/exemption requirements stated above, may apply to Universities South Africa (USAF), for mature age exemption (https://mb.usaf.ac.za/).
Require a symbol of E or higher for Mathematics on HG, or a symbol of D or higher for Mathematics on SG. Candidates who do not meet the Mathematics requirement may be offered admission on condition that they successfully complete the BCom bridging programme, if they have achieved at least a symbol of E on HG or a C on SG in any two of the following subjects Economics, Business Economics, Accounting, Physical Science or Physics/Chemistry, Natural Science or Biology.

Require a minimum of 50% in four NSC 20-credit subjects, including English.
Require a minimum mark of 50% for Mathematics or 70% for Mathematics Literacy.
Candidates who do not meet the Mathematics requirement but who have achieved a minimum mark of 50% or higher in any two of the following subjects may be offered admission on condition that they successfully complete the bridging programme: Economics, Business Economics, Accounting, Physical Science or Physics/ Chemistry, Natural Science or Biology.

Candidates who have completed a relevant Higher Certificate (NQF 5) or Diploma (NQF 6) in the field of business or commerce, may also be admitted to the BCom degree.

Does NSFAS fund Milpark Education?

NSFAS only covers public institutions and TVET Colleges. As a private higher education institution, Milpark Education does not offer NSFAS funding. However, we provide select bursaries and work closely with Capitec to offer financial aid to prospective students. Learn more about our Capitec partnership here.

Does Milpark offer bursaries?

Yes, Milpark Education offers bursaries based on academic performance and financial need. Applications typically open in September and close in November for the following year. Please note, bursaries are not available for the Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting (PGDA/CTA) and Advanced Accounting (Bridging Short Course to PGDA/CTA).

The School of Commerce offers majors in Digital Business, Economics, Marketing Management, HR Mangement, Financial Management, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Compliance and Risk Management or Taxation. The School of Professional Accounting provides a BCom in Accounting. The School of Financial Services offers majors in Banking, Financial Planning, Investment Management, Short-term Insurance, Credit or Banking and Investment Management.

No. While BCom includes more quantitative modules, it is designed to help students understand and apply data, not become data analysts.

Does BBA include any data or statistics?

Yes, but BBA students are provided with data to interpret rather than generate it. The focus is on using insights to manage and lead effectively.
