Bachelor of Commerce Majoring in Financial Management

This qualification is designed for individuals seeking to enhance their knowledge of financial management, financial services, and related fields. It’s also beneficial for those transitioning into careers in finance.

This program equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate complex financial landscapes, make informed decisions, and contribute to business success.

It prepares graduates for careers in finance, banking, investment and other related fields, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to analyse financial data, make strategic decisions, and manage resources effectively. Ethical considerations are emphasized, and adaptability is instilled through staying updated on industry trends and regulatory changes.

This BCom major is suitable for students who are planning to work in the financial services industry; however, many of the modules are generic, so the qualification is also applicable to other industries.

On successful completion of the qualification, the student will receive a Bachelor of Commerce Degree, NQF Level 7.

Available learning modes

Full- or Half-load

Students can complete the programme in a minimum of three or six years, and a maximum of nine years.

To complete the programme in three years, students need to dedicate about 40 hours a week to studies, just like at a contact university. We call this the full-load programme.

If students can’t dedicate 40 hours per week for the full-load, there is the option to complete the programme over a minimum of six years on a half-load.

Minimum Admission Requirements

  • Require a minimum of 24 points on the Milpark points system.
  • Require a symbol of E or higher for Mathematics on HG, or a symbol of D or higher for Mathematics on SG.
  • Candidates who do not meet the Mathematics requirement but who have achieved a rating of 4 or higher in any two of the following subjects may be offered admission on condition that they successfully complete the bridging programme: Economics, Business Economics, Accounting, Physical Science or Physics/Chemistry, Natural Science or Biology.
  • Candidates who do not meet the 24-point admission criterion, may apply to Universities South Africa (USAF), for mature age exemption (https://mb.usaf.ac.za/).
  • Require a minimum of 50% in four NSC 20-credit subjects, including English.
  • A minimum mark of 50% for Mathematics or 70% for Mathematics Literacy.
  • Candidates who do not meet the Mathematics requirement but who have achieved a minimum mark of 50% or higher in any two of the following subjects may be offered admission on condition that they successfully complete the bridging programme: Economics, Business Economics, Accounting, Physical Science or Physics/ Chemistry, Natural Science or Biology.

Does NSFAS fund Milpark Education?

NSFAS only covers public institutions and TVET Colleges. As a private higher education institution, Milpark Education does not offer NSFAS funding. However, we provide select bursaries and work closely with Capitec to offer financial aid to prospective students. Learn more about our Capitec partnership here.

Does Milpark offer bursaries?

Yes, Milpark Education offers bursaries based on academic performance and financial need. Applications typically open in September and close in November for the following year. Please note, bursaries are not available for the Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting (PGDA/CTA) and Advanced Accounting (Bridging Short Course to PGDA/CTA).

When studying for your Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) degree at Milpark Education, you can choose the general BCom stream or specialise with a major from one of our three schools.

The School of Commerce offers majors in Digital Business, Economics, Marketing Management, HR Mangement, Financial Management, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Compliance and Risk Management or Taxation. The School of Professional Accounting provides a BCom in Accounting. The School of Financial Services offers majors in Banking, Financial Planning, Investment Management, Short-term Insurance, Credit or Banking and Investment Management.

What subjects do I need to take in high school to pursue a commerce qualification at Milpark?

To pursue a commerce degree at Milpark, you need a minimum of an E symbol in Higher Grade Mathematics or a D in Standard Grade.

If you don’t meet the mathematics requirement, you may still be admitted by completing the BCom bridging programme. This is available if you have an E in Higher Grade or a C in Standard Grade in two of the following subjects:

No. While BCom includes more quantitative modules, it is designed to help students understand and apply data, not become data analysts.

Does BBA include any data or statistics?

Yes, but BBA students are provided with data to interpret rather than generate it. The focus is on using insights to manage and lead effectively.
