Francis’ career spans entrepreneurial work and roles across education, marketing, and financial services. After being headhunted into her role as a financial planner and wealth advisor at a Sanlam Blue Star in the Free State, she became increasingly aware of the growing complexity of the profession.
While experience builds intuition and client relationships, it does not always keep pace with evolving legislation, compliance requirements, and economic change. At the same time, theoretical knowledge without practical grounding can fall short in real-world decision making.
For Francis, the challenge was not choosing between experience and expertise but integrating the two.
From the beginning, Francis was clear about her goals. Earning the CFP® designation was important to her, and so was how she achieved it. Graduating cum laude was an intentional objective—not as a personal accolade, but as tangible evidence to clients that her advice is grounded in rigorous study, discipline, and depth of understanding rather than mere compliance.
She believed that the level of effort behind a qualification matters, particularly in a profession where trust and accountability are central.
“From the beginning, I knew I didn’t just want to pass,” Francis explains. “The CFP® designation mattered to me, and so did how I achieved it. Graduating cum laude was important because I wanted my clients to know that I take the responsibility of advising them seriously, and that I put real effort into building the expertise behind my advice.”
Studying while working fulltime required significant sacrifice. During the most demanding periods, Francis experienced a noticeable slowdown in her business as focus shifted toward meeting academic requirements. The decision meant accepting short-term disruption with the understanding that rebuilding momentum would come later.
There was also uncertainty. Returning to formal study later than most students raised concerns about keeping pace academically and whether the investment would translate into meaningful professional value. It was not a decision taken lightly—but one made with clear intent.
After exploring various study options, Francis chose Milpark Education to complete her Advanced Certificate in Financial Planning. Initially, the appeal was the flexible online format that made studying alongside fulltime work possible. What made the difference, however, was the structure.
“With Milpark, the lecturers explain the difficult areas rather than leaving you to figure them out on your own,” she says. “That level of guidance mattered more than I expected.”
The clarity of course design, detailed study guides, predictable workloads, and access to academic support made it possible to plan realistically and maintain momentum under pressure.
After completing the Advanced Certificate, progressing to the Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Planning became the natural next step. The postgraduate programme demanded deeper engagement with complex material and a more disciplined study approach—reflecting the level of responsibility required in professional financial planning.
Although the programme was completed independently, Francis never felt unsupported. She completed the qualification in 2025, graduating cum laude and earning recognition as a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) through the Financial Planning Institute of Southern Africa.
“The structure Milpark provided was an absolute game‑changer,” Francis says. “I genuinely don’t believe I would have been able to do this without that level of support.”
She credits Milpark’s structured and supportive academic environment as central to achieving her goals. The framework made it possible not only to complete the qualification, but to do so at the standard she had set for herself. Completing the postgraduate qualification within one year required sustained focus, careful planning, and consistent academic support.
The most meaningful outcome of the journey was not a title, but a shift in how Francis approaches her work.
The qualification strengthened her technical reasoning, improved her ability to navigate regulatory complexity, and increased her confidence when dealing high‑stakes financial decisions. It also changed how clients engage with those conversations.
“There’s a different level of confidence from the outset,” she notes. “Clients take comfort in knowing that the advice they receive is grounded in both experience and rigorous formal study.”
Colleagues increasingly seek her input on technically complex matters, particularly where regulatory interpretation or structured planning is required.

Returning to study mid‑career is not without cost, nor is it a shortcut to success. For Francis, it required sacrifice and the willingness to temporarily slow one area of professional life in order to strengthen another.
What it provided was a far stronger foundation on which to rebuild—grounded in clarity, competence, and confidence. For working financial professionals who care deeply about the quality of their advice and the trust placed in them, structured academic study can be a demanding but worthwhile investment.
Milpark’s Financial Planning qualifications are designed to support professionals at different career stages, providing the structure needed to meet high standards while balancing real world responsibilities.
