Billy grew up in Tweefontein, Mpumalanga. Opportunities were scarce, but his ambition was strong. He couldn’t afford to study engineering, so after finishing school, he moved to Johannesburg and found a job as a cashier at a petrol station.
It was there that a chance encounter changed everything. One of his regular customers was an insurance advisor who was impressed by Billy’s friendly, engaging manner and suggested he start selling insurance for AVBOB.
What began as a side hustle soon became the foundation of Billy’s success: “I really enjoyed helping people understand their finances and make better decisions.” By 2014, Billy had founded his own independent insurance practice – BK Brokers, based in Midrand – a move that broadened his horizons in financial planning.

Running an insurance business opened Billy’s eyes to how different finance professionals support their clients. He frequently came into contact with financial planners. “I was fascinated. They weren’t just selling products; they were trusted advisors, helping people build a future.”
Billy wanted to support his clients more holistically. He expanded BK Brokers’ offering to include wealth management, estate planning and other financial services. As the business evolved, Billy realised his experience could only take him so far. To give clients the quality advice they deserved – and to remain FAIS-compliant – he needed formal, accredited learning in financial planning.
“I had the experience, but not the qualification. I wanted to understand the technicalities of financial planning and to know that my advice met professional standards.”
That’s why Billy enrolled in Milpark’s Advanced Certificate in Financial Planning, designed for finance professionals who are seeking the FSA® designation awarded by the Financial Planning Institute (FPI).
Milpark’s flexible, fully online approach suited Billy. “Flexibility was a big factor. I could study at my own pace without neglecting my clients or family.”
Although Billy had been working in finance for years, he soon realised there was still plenty to learn. “The content was practical, and I could apply it immediately – making my work more precise in all areas, from estate planning to car allowances.”
At first, balancing studies with business and family wasn’t easy. “I thought I’d manage without a timetable,” Billy admits. “I was wrong. Milpark taught me how to plan, stick to a schedule, and prepare properly. The structured approach made it manageable.”
That discipline paid off. “When I sit with a client, I can answer their questions confidently. They trust me because I know what I’m doing,” he says. “I’m more specialised now, better able to identify risks and help clients plan for the future. Technically, I’ve learned a lot.”

Now, Billy encourages others in the financial services industry to invest in their education early. “Don’t just rely on experience. Get the qualification. It gives you confidence and changes how people see you.”
